Emily N S • Administrative Assistant
Emily N.S. is a teacher, musician, and writer from Evanston, Illinois. She has always been passionate about effective organization and communication, and is happy to bring these strengths to her new role as an administrator in the office at NMA. As a child, she was trained in both classical and jazz piano, then began singing in choir and musical theatre at Evanston Township High School, where she played the roles of Maria in West Side Story and Hope Harcourt in Anything Goes. She began formal vocal training around this time and was a two-year member of the singing ensemble in the school’s annual musical comedy revue, YAMO. Since then, she has pursued a career in social studies education, graduating magna cum laude with a B.A. in Teaching of History from UIC in 2015.
However, she never fully left the world of music and through her college and postcollegiate years, she sang lead and backup in three Chicago-area bands, sang professionally for the Annual Historic Pullman House Tour from 2014-2017, and worked as a marketing intern and music teacher for Intonation Music Workshop. She believes that teaching is just as much of an art as music, and that every student deserves access to high-quality arts education and all of the wonderful (and scientifically proven!) benefits it provides.
Emily is also a proud cat and plant mom, has been organizing with a local mutual aid group since the start of the pandemic, and is (finally!) taking formal guitar lessons. At NMA, you can count on Emily to warmly welcome all students and families, to prioritize the safety and health of everyone in the building, and to encourage every student to pursue their dream instrument and keep at it – until their ears love to hear what music they can create!
